Tropical Storm Andrea sped along the Carolinas on Friday, bringing drenching rains and the promise of sloppy commutes to the region.

Ben Nelson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Fla., said Andrea was “moving at a pretty brisk pace” and could lose its tropical characteristics as early as Friday morning.

As of 11 a.m ET Friday, Tropical Storm Andrea’s winds had decreased to 45 mph. The storm is not forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, but the National Weather Service has issued flood watches from Georgia to Maine.

The center of the storm was located about 50 miles southwest of Fayetteville, N.C., and was moving to the northeast at 28 mph.

Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for the East Coast from South Carolina to Virginia.

What remains of Andrea will continue to move north up the East Coast on Friday and Saturday. Locally heavy rain, brief gusty winds and a flooding risk are all possible from the Southeast coast to New England, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
