Late Thursday, Asheville streets department announced they’ve completed repairs on eight landslides that washed out area roads. It€™s been a huge part of our last two weeks, but in this business you just roll with the punches and try to make the best, said city engineer Greg Shuler.
Record amounts of rainfall this July contributed to the damage. That forced Asheville to hire outside contractors at a hefty price to help clean up the mess.
We’re getting some inflated cost because we’re telling these contractors we need you to stop whatever you’re doing and come work on this, Shuler said.
City leaders say the total cost of repairs is rising everyday including thousands of dollars for city workers diverted from other projects. Said Shuler, Yes, we’ve had some additional overtime due to this event. It€™s a welcome cost for people navigating storm damaged roads. It€™s probably better,€ said David Smiley. €œI mean there are some roads up that way that have completely fallen apart and they are scary to drive past. so yes, its probably good.By: Mario Boone, mlboone@wlos.com Follow on Twitter: @marioboone
